September Opens Through a Jobs Week, Not a Clean Month

August settles Monday. Tuesday resets the monthly map. Friday’s Employment Situation is the vote.

August 31–September 4, 2026

August settles Monday. Tuesday resets the monthly map. Friday’s Employment Situation is the vote. The Fed still has one week to speak before blackout.

Last week answered a company question and left a market question on the desk. Nvidia cleared. Breadth did not sign. Friday mailed the invoice: the Composite faded, Russell broke its lower expected-move line, gold reversed through its field, and the front end of the curve did more work than the Dow’s nine-point nap.

This week is not a second Jackson Hole. It is not a new-quarter open. Q3 still has a month. It is a month-end, a September open, a leftover infrastructure earnings slate, and a four-day labor sequence that ends Friday at 8:30 a.m. ET.

The expensive mistake is treating Monday as September. It is not. Monday is August’s last cash session. The monthly OHLMC resets Tuesday.

The second expensive mistake is treating every jobs print as a separate headline. JOLTS Tuesday, ADP Wednesday, weekly claims Thursday, and payrolls Friday are one labor vote with four timestamps.

The Week's Confirmed Decision Points

All times are Eastern. Schedule details below come from the named official agencies or company. Street estimates are not an official number; where they disagree, the print is the vote.

DayTimeConfirmed eventWhat traders need to learn
Mon Aug 31Auction / settlementTreasury 13-week and 26-week bill auctions. Settlement of last week’s 2s, 5s, 7s, 20-year, and 30-year TIPS.August cash month-end. Coupon settlement, not a new monthly map.
Tue Sep 19:05 a.m.Fed Governor Michael S. Barr, economic outlook and financial inclusion, Washington.Last speaking week before FOMC blackout. Tone, not a rate call.
Tue Sep 19:45 a.m.S&P Global U.S. Manufacturing PMI final, August. Flash already printed 53.2.Does the final confirm the flash, or rewrite it.
Tue Sep 110:00 a.m.ISM Manufacturing, August. July was 55.6. Census construction spending, July. BLS JOLTS, July. June openings were little changed at 7.4 million.First September cash session plus the first labor read. Factory, housing put-in-place, and the job-opening stock hit the same clock.
Tue Sep 1After the cash sessionDell conference call 4:30 p.m. Palo Alto Networks after the close. Medtronic before the open.Hardware and security leftovers. Not a second Nvidia.
Wed Sep 28:15 a.m.ADP National Employment Report, August. July was +44,000.Private payrolls before Friday’s official print. One input, not the vote.
Wed Sep 210:00 a.m.Census full factory-orders report, July. June full report was −0.3%.The July durables advance already printed last Wednesday. This is the revision plus nondurables.
Wed Sep 22:00 p.m.Beige Book (Federal Reserve Board clock).Anecdote check against last week’s sticky PCE and this week’s labor sequence.
Wed Sep 2After the closeBroadcom. Also HPE and Snowflake. The leftover AI-infrastructure vote after Nvidia cleared the company bar.
Thu Sep 38:30 a.m.Fed Governor Christopher J. Waller, economic outlook (Reuters NEXT). Same window: weekly claims, July trade, Q2 productivity revision.A voter talks into claims. Last week’s claims print was 203,000.
Thu Sep 39:45 / 10:00 a.m.S&P Global services and composite PMI finals (flash 56.8 / 56.0). ISM Services, August. July was 54.1, with employment already at 47.4.Services can hold the headline and still show hiring that does not.
Thu Sep 3Auction / announce4-week and 8-week bills. Announcement of the next coupon cycle (3s / 10s / 30s), which auctions next week because of Labor Day.Supply path into the holiday week. Sizes were not copied from this week’s offering PDFs.
Fri Sep 48:30 a.m.BLS Employment Situation, August. July payrolls were −23,000. Unemployment 4.1%.Last full cash session before Labor Day weekend. The labor vote that the rest of the week is building.

FOMC is September 15–16, with a Summary of Economic Projections. That is next week. Blackout at the Reserve Banks we can source starts Saturday, September 5. This is the last speaking week.

Labor Day is Monday, September 7. Markets are open every session this week. Friday is just the last full cash day before the long weekend.

Monday Closes August

Monday is not a new map.

It is August’s last regular cash session. Monthly August levels are not finished until that close. Coupon settlement from last week’s note and bond auctions lands the same day. The 13-week and 26-week bills auction into that month-end.

If you mark September on Monday, you are early. The first September cash print is Tuesday.

Sunday evening Globex is still the Monday session. Treat it as August’s last handoff, not the monthly open.

Tuesday Opens September

Tuesday does three jobs at once.

It opens the September cash month. That is when PonoTrading’s monthly OHLMC resets. Do not publish a monthly expected-move map in this note. Monday’s Pulse can put fresh bands on the board after the weekly open. Tuesday’s Pulse can mark the new month. This post only names the clock.

It stacks ISM Manufacturing, construction spending, and JOLTS at 10:00 a.m., fifteen minutes after the S&P manufacturing PMI final, and nine minutes after Barr starts talking.

And it starts the leftover earnings list. Medtronic before the open. Dell’s call at 4:30 p.m. Palo Alto after the close. Those are company tests. Last week already taught the difference.

July ISM Manufacturing was 55.6. That is still expansion. JOLTS openings in June were little changed at 7.4 million. Those two prints do not have to agree. Factory can stay firm while the job-opening stock rolls. That split is the Tuesday read.

The Labor Sequence Is One Vote

Four timestamps. One question.

July payrolls fell 23,000. Prior months were revised down. That is the burden of proof Friday inherited. It is not a forecast of August.

Wednesday’s ADP is the private-payroll preview. July ADP was +44,000. It can disagree with Friday and still be useful if you treat it as a location, not a license.

Thursday’s claims sit in the same 8:30 window as Waller. Last print: 203,000. A voter talking over a claims number is not a reason to skip the level.

Friday is the Employment Situation. Street estimates we saw cluster in the mid-50,000s and do not agree with each other (roughly 55,000 to 58,000 across the calendars we checked). That is not “the” consensus. Do not trade a single guessed print. Trade whether August repairs July’s −23,000, or confirms it.

ISM Services is the quiet tell inside that sequence. July’s services headline was 54.1. Employment inside that report was already 47.4. A services economy can print expansion and still stop hiring. If Thursday’s services employment stays soft and Friday’s payrolls stay soft, that is one story. If the headline ISM holds and payrolls bounce, that is another.

CPI and PPI are not this week. They land September 10–11. Do not drag them into Friday’s 8:30.

Last Speaking Week

Barr Tuesday. Beige Book Wednesday. Waller Thursday.

Then the Reserve Bank blackout we can source starts Saturday. The next FOMC is September 15–16. The SEP lands there, not here.

Warsh already talked at Jackson Hole. The indexes absorbed the language. Small caps, gold, and the front end did not. This week’s speakers do not get to rewind that. They get to talk into a jobs week.

Use the Board clock for Beige Book: 2:00 p.m. ET Wednesday. If a regional page shows a different hour, the Board is the publisher.

The Board’s September speaker page may still be thin. Absence of a name is not proof nobody else talks. If a chair time is not on the Board calendar, this plan does not invent one.

Broadcom Is the Leftover Company Test

Nvidia already answered. Salesforce and Marvell already reported. Those are last week.

This week’s index-relevant leftover is Broadcom after the close Wednesday, with Dell the afternoon before. HPE and Snowflake sit in the same Wednesday window. Ciena, lululemon, and Zscaler follow Thursday.

A clean Broadcom number is a company test. It is not permission to buy every green semiconductor screen. Last Thursday already ran that movie. YM and RTY still have to sign.

If Broadcom clears and Friday payrolls fail, you have two different votes. Do not average them into one bias.

Three Paths Through the Week

1. Labor repairs and the September open is accepted

JOLTS does not break, ADP and claims stay orderly, and Friday repairs July’s −23,000 without a hot wage surprise. ISM stays in expansion. Broadcom does not have to carry the index by itself.

Confirmation: the September open holds after Tuesday’s 10:00 stack, and Friday’s first hour accepts instead of rejecting the print. Invalidation: Russell and the equal-weight tape fade while one AI name lifts the Composite. That is last Thursday again.

2. Labor stays soft while prices stay firm

Another weak payrolls print, or JOLTS openings roll over, while ISM prices or Wednesday’s Beige Book still read tight. Sticky PCE from last Wednesday already put that conflict on the board.

Confirmation: yields do not give the growth names a hall pass, and gold or the front end keep doing the work they did Friday. Invalidation: a soft labor print that the index treats as instant easing, with no acceptance in YM and RTY.

3. The votes disagree

ISM holds. Jobs do not. Or Broadcom answers the infrastructure question and Friday answers the labor question the other way. Or Barr and Waller talk past the prints.

That is the base case to plan, not a surprise. Pre-define which vote you are actually in. A morning structure trade can be right on a day the Composite finishes higher. A Wednesday earnings long can be right and still leave Friday’s 8:30 untouched.

The PonoTrading Plan

Mark Monday as August’s close. Mark Tuesday as the September open. Do not mix the maps.

Write the labor sequence as one idea with four invalidations, not four separate hunches. If you are going to hold through Friday 8:30, size it before Tuesday’s 10:00 stack, not after Thursday’s claims.

Separate the company test from the market test. Dell and Broadcom can clear and still leave breadth unsigned. YM and RTY remain the lie detector after any mega-cap print.

Do not invent weekly or monthly expected-move bands in this note. If Monday’s Pulse has verified Friday anchors, use those. If a contract or vol input is missing, skip that row. The field is a location. It is not a dare.

Bottom Line

The week is a clock, not a prediction contest.

Monday ends August. Tuesday opens September and starts the labor read. Wednesday adds ADP, the Beige Book, and Broadcom. Thursday is a voter plus claims and services. Friday is payrolls, then a long weekend.

Last week paid the trader who made breadth say it to his face. This week pays the trader who knows which timestamp he is actually in.
