Market Pulse: Yield Pressure Tests Tech as Gold Holds Its Bid

Higher Treasury yields are pressuring Nasdaq leadership while gold holds a defensive bid. Monday's map centers on expected-move acceptance ahead of PCE, GDP, Nvidia, and Jackson Hole.

The expensive mistake this morning is treating a soft index future as a simple dip-buy signal. The tape is opening into a week where higher yields, inflation data and Nvidia's results can all change the price investors are willing to pay for growth.

Early positioning is defensive rather than disorderly. S&P 500 futures are near 7,677, down about 0.2%, while Nasdaq 100 futures are near 29,218, down about 0.6%. Dow futures are near 53,326. The distinction matters: the weakness is concentrated in the duration-sensitive part of the market, not a broad liquidation across every risk asset.

The macro crosscurrent is still doing the work. The 10-year Treasury yield is near 4.71%, the dollar index is near 98.97, and gold is holding near $4,700 even as crude eases toward $84.96. That mix keeps the market's message clear: traders are willing to own protection, but they have not yet been forced into a wholesale exit from risk.

Today's expected-move map

Use these one-day, 68% probability bands as risk boundaries—not forecasts. Acceptance outside a band can expand the auction; a rejection back inside it can offer a cleaner reset point.

MarketReferenceExpected moveLower bandUpper band
ES7,677+/- 777,6007,754
NQ29,218+/- 29328,92529,511
YM53,326+/- 53452,79253,860
Gold$4,700+/- $47$4,653$4,747
WTI crude$84.96+/- $2.00$82.96$86.96

Because this is the first trading day of the week, keep the wider weekly field in view as well:

MarketWeekly expected moveLower bandUpper band
ES+/- 1697,5087,846
NQ+/- 64228,57629,860
YM+/- 1,17852,14854,504
Gold+/- $104$4,596$4,804
WTI crude+/- $4.53$80.43$89.49

For index traders, NQ is the decision point. A quick reclaim of the lower expected-move boundary would argue that the open is testing liquidity, not repricing the AI complex. Continued acceptance below it would put the burden on buyers to prove that last week's rate pressure has been absorbed.

For gold, strength is useful only if it remains orderly. Holding the upper half of its daily field while equities stabilize would keep the defensive bid intact; a fast failure back through the lower band would reduce the urgency of the hedge trade.

The week is the catalyst

Monday does not carry a top-tier U.S. economic release. The real decision points arrive Wednesday with July PCE and the second estimate of second-quarter GDP, followed by Nvidia's results after the close. Friday brings Fed Chair Kevin Warsh's Jackson Hole remarks. That sequence makes position size and location more important than a first-hour prediction.

Nvidia is the focal point because investors will be judging more than reported earnings. Guidance, data-center demand and the durability of AI spending are the pieces that can either support or challenge Nasdaq leadership. PCE and Jackson Hole then determine whether the bond market gives that leadership room to recover.

The practical plan is simple: respect the expected-move edges, avoid chasing the first move in a rate-sensitive open, and let acceptance—not a headline—decide whether risk is returning. Build the trade around the level that proves you wrong before you build it around the outcome you want.

PonoTrading members can use the daily expected-move map to define risk, wait for acceptance, and keep a single trade from becoming a week-long thesis.
