Equities Are Opening Red. Claims Has Minutes to Change That.
A green close is not permission to open long. September ES, NQ, YM, and RTY were all lower into 8:30 a.m. ET claims and Philly Fed, with crude leaning on the top of its daily band.
A green close is not permission to open long.
Wednesday's cash session finished green after Treasury said it would at least double long-end buybacks. That close is not the open. As of about 2:00 a.m. HT, September ES, NQ, YM, and RTY were all lower versus Wednesday's daily closes and sitting in the lower half of today's daily one-standard-deviation fields. Crude was leaning on the top of its band. Walmart raised full-year guidance at 6:00 a.m. CT and was still sold in premarket. Weekly claims and Philly Fed print at 8:30 a.m. ET.

What You Need to Know
- The tape into 8:30 is red, not a leftover green close. ES 7,703.75, NQ 29,357.50, YM 53,236, RTY 3,024.70 — all inside daily 1SD, lower half, versus Wednesday futures closes of 7,729.00 / 29,512.75 / 53,530 / 3,039.90.
- Crude is the overnight pressure. WTI 87.24 against daily +1SD 87.97. If that band accepts, Wednesday's yield-relief close is not a handoff.
- Walmart raised guidance and still faded. Official Q2 FY27 release included a 750-basis-point tariff-refund boost inside operating-income growth. Premarket near $107.53 versus Wednesday's $114.30 regular close.
- 8:30 a.m. ET is the red folder: DOL weekly initial claims for the week ended August 15 (prior official print, week ended August 8: 209,000) and the Philadelphia Fed August Manufacturing Business Outlook Survey.
- Wednesday's sponsor was Treasury, not a dovish Fed. Minutes of the July 28-29 meeting were a 9-3 hold at 3.50%-3.75%. Three members preferred +25 bp. Many participants said tightening is likely if inflation does not decline.
